My name is Didi Barnes, eldest granddaughter of Max Faulkner, OBE, who, having reached the ripe old age of 88, died on Saturday 26th February 2005 as a result of a cardiac arrest. Max was a golfing star of the 1950s best known for winning the British open Championship at Royal Portrush in 1951. However, he was also a fascinating man and a wonderful grandfather. Max (whom I nicknamed "Moosh" or "Mooshtie") always used to quip as he was getting older, "It's getting dark". Now that he is finally resting in the darkness, I have produced this web site with the intent that his light should shine on "out there" as it always will do in my heart. I, along with the rest of the family and all the others into whose lives you brought so much fun and laughter, will miss you so much, Mooshtie. In fact it is strange sitting here reading back over what I wrote above (it is now 18 April 2009 as I sit here typing) - it reminds me how much I still miss him, and so intensely sometimes that it makes me cry. My younger life wasn't a breeze, one way and another, but I am always reminded of how Max was always there for me, always encouraging, even during the times when the rest of the family had turned away from me. I think Max was the only one (along with his wife, Joan ("Jodie" to me)) who really understood me. I have "Asperger's Syndrome" and "bipolar disorder" - and I have often wondered whether perhaps he understood me because he had a flavour of these conditions himself. |
