Here are some facts about Max:
- Max was born in England on July 29, 1916 as Herbert Gustavus Max Faulkner.
- Max's father, Gus Faulkner, was also a professional golfer and owned a golf course at Selsey (it was here that Max practiced in preparation for his Open Championship win in 1951).
Max was a PT (Physical Training) Instructor with the RAF during World War II and didn't pick up a golf club, but instead took up boxing and was a services champion.
- He owned a farm in one of England's home counties and loved the outdoor life. He knew a great deal about nature and birds and could recognise many of the bird calls.
- Max owned a half-share in the West Chiltington Golf Club, the course designed by my father, Brian Barnes (I used to run the professional shop which was owned by my father). Dad commented recently that Max, up until only a year or so before his death, could still play nine holes in 36 strokes!
- Max was made a Freeman of the City of London.
- Max and his wife Joan had three children: Guy, Hilary, and ten years later, John. Hilary is married to that other famous ryder cup player, Brian Barnes! Guy and his wife Judie have three children: Lucy, Deborah and Sara. Hilary and Brian have two children, Didi (who is writing this) and Guy. John has one child (Max Faulkner jnr).
